Training activities

Descrizione

For PhD programs, training consists of:

- Curricular activity (organized by the Ph.D. course of belonging)

- Transferable skills (common to all Ph.D. courses and organized by IUSS)

Ph.D. students are required to attend teaching activities (disciplinary and transversal) at the doctoral level that are complementary to research, acquiring at least 40 CFU over the three-year period, of which not less than 20 CFU are of a transversal nature.

The recognition of CFUs, related to disciplinary and transversal educational activities not offered by IUSS, is carried out by the College of Teachers.

Transversal educational activities offered by IUSS provide for direct recognition of CFUs as provided by the Institute's Council.

The College of Teachers annually evaluates the training and research activities carried out by individual doctoral students for the purpose of admission to the following year and the evaluation of the thesis.

Transferable skills

IUSS annually defines and organizes numerous interdisciplinary courses to enable Ph.D. students both to develop basic linguistic/communication and technological skills and transferable and soft skills that allow them to acquire competencies beyond the specialized notions of the individual Ph.D. course, while also offering the possibility of creating spaces for interdisciplinary comparison among Ph.D. students from different areas.

The planning of cross-curricular educational activities takes place annually, usually by January, following the definition of the budget dedicated to them.
Courses are taught in English.

Trasnferable skills areas

Trasnferable training activites are divided into three areas:

Curricular training activities

Ph.D. students are required to attend disciplinary training activities related to the area(s) and/or disciplines specific to the PhD program.

Disciplinary training activities include:

  • specialized courses and seminar cycles offered by the PhD course, as scheduled annually by the Academic Board of the course;
  • courses/seminars/conferences organized by the University for which the Academic Board of the course evaluates the suitability with respect to the training and research objectives of the Ph.D. student and establishes the number of credits to be assigned;
  • courses/seminars/conferences organized by other universities/research institutions/companies for which the course's Academic Board assesses the suitability with respect to the PhD student's training and research objectives and determines the number of credits to be assigned.
  • Teaching activities may also be organized jointly among several PhD courses.

The Internal Regulations of the PhD courses define the amount of CFUs recognizable to individual activities.
