Oxford test of English (OTE) certifications

5 Credits - In-person
Passing the test

In collaboration with the Centro Linguistico di Ateneo (CLA), the IUSS offers all PhD students the opportunity to obtain the Oxford Test Of English (OTE) certification.

You can take the test to achieve B1, B2, or C1 level. The certification issued has no expiration date and is accepted by many institutions both in Italy and abroad.

The test is divided into four modules: Speaking, Listening, Reading, and Writing. The Reading and Listening sections are "computer adaptive," meaning they adjust the difficulty of the questions based on the answers given. This makes OTE a completely personalized test that is also shorter and more precise in evaluating B1, B2, and C1 levels.

The activities in the Speaking and Writing sections are randomized. Each test is therefore an individual experience tailored to the specific abilities of the test-taker.

The CLA offers a self-study preparation course for the B1, B2, and C1 level OTE certification, which you can access upon enrollment.

Upon obtaining the certification, 5 transversal credits are awarded.

Communication skills for researchers

Course structure

The course, designed to provide a solid foundation in science popularisation, has a seminar structure and covers the following topics:

  1. Technical and scientific writing
  2. Public speaking
  3. Representing the scientific community in the age of new media

Course presentation

If you do very relevant research, but no one understands it, is it truly relevant?

Communication is a fundamental skill for people in research, both within and outside the Academic environment. The scientific community is widespread, and every researcher builds on the advancements that others made, which scientific literature and conferences allow to know.
At the same time, research is meant to have an impact on society, which can only happen if applicable scientific discoveries can move from those who achieved them to those who can put them into practice, and if researchers manage to stay a reference point for policy makers, organization and the public when talking about innovation.
At last, every researcher is also a future innovation worker, who may develop his or her career inside the Academic track, outside of it, or in between. Being able not only to communicate the results of research, but also the role and relevance of trained researchers as workers in a knowledge society, with their peculiar skillset and potential to transfer, is crucial to support each researcher’s career management capacity.
For those reasons, IUSS is providing support for PhD students who want to develop their communication skills, for research and for their professional development, with a program in three steps, following the unfolding of the PhD experience from first to third year.

All modules will be delivered in English.
