Course content:
The course is based on the study of different chromatographic techniques, of interest both from the laboratory and from
the industrial point of view, designed for the separation and purification of biomolecules and molecules with therapeutic
properties. A special attention will be given to environmentally-friendly and sustainable approaches.
Primo modulo
In the first module of the course, liquid chromatographic techniques will be examined, and both analytical and
preparative aspects will be considered from a theoretical point of view. Starting from the purification processes
traditionally adopted for biomolecules mixtures, such as single-column methods, the focus will then move towards very
modern chromatographic techniques, developed only a few years ago, such as multicolumn chromatography. Also
Supercritical Fluid Chromatography will be discussed, particularly appealing from the point of view of the greenness of
the process, since it substitutes traditional solvents with supercritical CO2.
Secondo modulo
The second module of the course will then focus on different real-case applications of the separation techniques described
in the first module, with examples of industrial interest. The classes of molecules considered along this module are
several, such as proteins, peptides, oligonucleotides and cannabinoids. A brief overview of method validation and
laboratory accreditation system will be given.
