The Stratigraphy and Sedimentology curriculum is focused on the geological and palaeontological study of outcropping and buried successions.

The research is based on the analysis of depositional facies associations, depositional architecture and sequence stratigraphic organisation of carbonate and terrigenous units.

The study is aimed at reconstructing the palaeoenvironmental and palaeoclimatic evolution of Mesozoic to Quaternary depositional sequences. These works bring implications for the hydrocarbon geology, the fluidostratigraphic characterisation of aquifers and the geological mapping of sedimentary units.

The research is based on the classical field techniques of sedimentological, ichnological and taphonomical facies analysis, within a framework of mobile GIS, GPS assisted geological mapping, Thin section and cathodoluminescence techniques are also used, alongside taxonomic determination of macro- and micro-fossils.
